About NorthGardenPost

A reference calendar for vegetable growers working with northern Poland's compressed growing season.

What this site covers

NorthGardenPost focuses on sowing and transplant timing for vegetable crops in northern Poland — specifically the Pomeranian, Warmia-Masurian, and Podlaskie regions. These areas experience last spring frosts as late as mid-to-late May and first autumn frosts in late September or early October, giving growers a noticeably shorter window than the national average often cited in seed catalogues.

The calendar and articles on this site draw on publicly available climate data from IMGW (the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management) and general agronomic references. All date ranges are approximate and reflect regional averages rather than forecasts for any specific year or location.

How dates are determined

Frost-free period estimates for each region come from IMGW's publicly available phenological and climatological datasets. Sowing recommendations follow standard agronomic references including the RHS Vegetables Growing Guide and Polish extension materials from the Ministry of Agriculture. Where sources diverge, the more conservative estimate is used — meaning the later start date or the shorter maturity window.

No proprietary research is cited. No original experiments are described. The purpose of this site is to consolidate publicly available information into a format useful to gardeners in northern Polish lowlands.

Regional focus

The three regions covered — Pomerania (Pomorskie), Warmia-Masuria (Warmińsko-Mazurskie), and Podlaskie — share broadly similar growing-season constraints despite differences in soil type and microclimate. Sandy soils dominate in Pomerania and Masuria, while Podlaskie has more varied terrain. These soil differences affect how quickly the ground warms in spring, which is noted where relevant in individual crop guides.
